Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 283 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Vision Jet taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KCDW Essex County Airport, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. Departure roll took place on runway 28, with a takeoff distance of 447 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 93 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind was negligible, with a headwind of 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Fairfield, New Jersey, and ascending from 1,197 feet above sea level to 3,898 feet, an increase of 2,700 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began overhead North Caldwell, New Jersey, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, beginning overhead the Passaic River Seaplane Base in Rutherford, New Jersey, and descending from 4,026 feet to 1,213 feet, a decrease of 2,814 feet in 2 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed overhead Secaucus, New Jersey, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent again, this time starting 1 mile south of Jersey City, New Jersey, and descending from 1,497 feet to 572 feet, a decrease of 925 feet in 2 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase continued, this time lasting 5 minutes and covering 18 nautical miles, as the aircraft flew overhead Hoboken, New Jersey. The aircraft then started its final climb, beginning overhead Irvington, New York, and ascending from 365 feet to 1,648 feet, an increase of 1,283 feet in 4 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at KHPN Westchester County Airport was made from the northwest, heading 150.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,202 feet above ground level. The landing took place on the runway, which had a length of 1,996 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was above the target at 82 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 281 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 72 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -203 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°.
The total landing distance was 437 meters, accounting for 22% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 51 nautical miles, taking 22 minutes, and the aircraft used 84 kilograms of fuel.
The Vision Jet has successfully landed at KHPN Westchester County Airport, achieving a score of 96.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 150.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,202 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 1,996 meters.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was notably higher than the target speed, reaching 82 knots. This may indicate that the pilot applied a bit more power than necessary during the approach. The touchdown distance of 281 meters was within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent.
However, the touchdown speed of 72 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate of -203 feet per minute (fpm). This could be attributed to the pilot's decision to flare the aircraft slightly earlier than necessary. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a minor deviation in the pilot's alignment during the approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind component was zero. The total landing distance of 437 meters was only 22% of the runway's length, indicating a relatively short landing roll.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was excellent, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability after touchdown. Overall, the Vision Jet's landing at KHPN Westchester County Airport was a success, with the pilot executing a precise approach and demonstrating good control during the landing roll.
