Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,953 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,953 m of the 2,794 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,195 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 15 at Birmingham International Airport, EGBB. The Airbus A321 took off with a takeoff distance of 1,783 meters, which was 77% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 182 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 180 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 9 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed overhead Hampton in Arden, Solihull, England. The enroute climb started at an altitude of 1,400 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 37,768 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,369 feet in just 24 minutes. During this climb, the aircraft covered a distance of 145 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 33 miles north of Etretat, Normandie, France, and lasted for 72 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 550 nautical miles. The cruise altitude was maintained at a steady level, allowing the aircraft to conserve fuel and maintain a comfortable cruising speed.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from a maximum altitude of 38,054 feet above sea level to 2,397 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,657 feet in just 28 minutes. The descent started 8 miles south of LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain, and covered a distance of 153 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a short level cruise, lasting just 4 minutes, as it flew 11 miles southwest of Es Cubells, Comunitat Autonoma de les Illes Balears, Spain. This brief cruise covered a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at LEIB Ibiza Airport was made from the southwest, heading 62.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 06, which had a length of 2,794 meters. The threshold height at 73 feet above ground level was well above the target, and the threshold speed was good at 138 knots.
The touchdown point was 776 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 129 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was firm at -306 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 7.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 80 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,869 meters, which was 67% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.6 meters from the centerline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 865 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 134 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,376 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at LEIB Ibiza Airport, achieving an overall score of 82.6%. The final approach to runway 06 was initiated from the south-west, with a heading of 62.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 129 kt, which was considered good. The touchdown point was located 776 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown rate was firm, measuring -306 feet per minute (fpm), which suggests a controlled descent.
The threshold height at 73 ft agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was good at 138 kt, demonstrating a well-executed approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°C and a wind speed of 6 kt from a direction of 80°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 6 kt, which likely contributed to the aircraft's stable approach and landing.
The total landing distance was 1,869 meters, accounting for 67% of the available runway length. This suggests that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for a safe stop. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 7.8 meters from the centerline, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing path.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been a result of the initial touchdown point deviation. Despite these minor deviations, the overall landing performance was satisfactory, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a reasonable distance.
