Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,598 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,598 m of the 2,944 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 462 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, taking approximately 4 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 23, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 170 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 140°, resulting in a crosswind of 8 knots and no headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from Hamburg, it began its enroute climb, starting approximately 1 mile northwest of Hamburg-Nord. The climb took place from an initial altitude of 1,041 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 34,394 feet, an increase of 33,353 feet over a distance of 151 nautical miles, taking 23 minutes to complete. The enroute level cruise phase began 2 miles north of Kibaek, Denmark, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 138 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase started 8 miles southeast of Arendal, Norway, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 34,824 feet to 1,962 feet, a decrease of 32,861 feet over a distance of 130 nautical miles, taking 27 minutes to complete. The final approach to runway 19L at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 196.0° at an altitude of 1,282 feet above ground level, 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing took place on runway 19L, which had a length of 2,944 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 147 knots. The touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 147 knots, which was considered fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -320 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C, a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 180°, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,520 meters, which was 52% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 9 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 427 nautical miles, taking 80 minutes to complete, and the aircraft used 3,887 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at ENGM Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, with a score of 98.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 196.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,282 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 19L, which has a length of 2,944 meters.
The landing was executed with a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 147 knots. This may have contributed to the touchdown speed being fast at 147 knots. The touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating that the aircraft touched down slightly further down the runway than intended.
The touchdown rate was firm at -320 feet per minute (fpm), which is a typical rate for a commercial airliner. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from 180°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 7 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's alignment and touchdown point.
The total landing distance was 1,520 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment and direction after touchdown.
Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, despite the slightly above-target threshold speed and misaligned touchdown point. The aircraft's ability to maintain a firm touchdown rate and good runway rollout alignment was a testament to the skill and expertise of the pilots.
