MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,900 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 633 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 14 at KDDC Dodge City Regional Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,486 meters, which accounted for 77% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 172 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of -14°C, with a wind speed of 15 knots at a direction of 209°. This resulted in a crosswind of 13 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of Wilroads Gardens, Kansas, and ascended from an altitude of 3,473 feet above sea level to 25,790 feet above sea level, an increase of 22,317 feet, in 17 minutes and covering a distance of 109 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile northeast of Burrton, Kansas, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 47 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 4 miles south of SN37 Harold K. Wells Airport Elmdale, Kansas, and involved a descent from 26,864 feet above sea level to 2,293 feet above sea level, a decrease of 24,572 feet, in 22 minutes and covering a distance of 113 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19 at KMKC Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 191.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,538 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft was required to execute a go-around at an altitude of 3,666 feet above ground level. The landing was eventually made on runway 19, with a runway length of 1,900 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 209 knots.
The touchdown point was 272 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 201 knots. However, the touchdown rate was good at -174 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -18°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at a direction of 218°, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,169 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 297 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 62 minutes. The aircraft used 383 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (KMKC) on runway 19. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 191.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,538 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but there were some notable issues with the landing performance.
The threshold speed was excessively high at 202 knots, which is a critical parameter in determining the safety and efficiency of the landing. A higher threshold speed can lead to a longer landing distance and increased wear on the aircraft's brakes. Furthermore, the touchdown speed of 201 knots was also excessively fast, which can cause the aircraft to bounce or skid upon touchdown. However, the touchdown rate of -174 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The touchdown point was 272 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. This could be due to a combination of factors, including the excessive threshold speed and the slightly misaligned runway touchdown position, which was off by 4.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of -18°C and a headwind of 7 knots, may have also contributed to the deviation.
Despite these issues, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll. The total landing distance of 1,169 meters was 62% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. Overall, while there were some notable issues with the landing performance, the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop on the runway.
