Settle the descent rate
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 300 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope, wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,921 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 146 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The F-35 Lightning II taxied from the parking area to runway 01 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport in six minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 01, the aircraft used 641 m of runway, representing 33 % of the available length, and lifted off at 152 kt. Local weather at the time was 5 °C with wind calm from 357°, no cross-wind and no head-wind.
Level cruise commenced overhead KJAC and was maintained for one minute, during which the aircraft traveled four nautical miles.
A go-around was executed on runway 01 at an altitude of 57 ft agl.
A second go-around followed on the same runway, this time at 34 ft agl.
The final approach to runway 01 was flown, and the aircraft scored on the stabilisation gates.
During the descent phase the aircraft dropped from 1,533 ft agl to 46 ft agl in twenty seconds.
Landing on runway 01 occurred with a runway length of 1,921 m; the threshold height was good and the threshold speed was a little below target at 146 kt. Touchdown distance measured 148 m and touchdown speed was 136 kt, both described as good. The touchdown rate was hard at minus 468 fpm, and the touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 3.1 m from the centreline. Local weather at landing was 4 °C with wind calm from 357°, no cross-wind and no head-wind. Total landing distance was 1,206 m, representing 63 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in four minutes, covering one nautical mile.
In total the flight covered 29 nm, lasted eleven minutes, and consumed 1,263 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 01 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport descended from 1,533 ft agl to 46 ft agl in 20 seconds and was scored on the stabilisation gates.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft maintained a good threshold height, while the threshold speed was a little below target at 146 kt; ambient temperature was 4 °C with wind calm at 0 kt from 357°.
Touchdown occurred 148 m down the runway at a speed of 136 kt, which was recorded as good, but the touchdown rate was hard at minus 468 fpm and the touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 3.1 m from the centreline.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,206 m, representing 63 % of the 1,921 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was perfect.
To reduce the hard touchdown rate, a slightly higher flare height or more gradual pitch-up should be practiced to achieve a smoother sink rate. Improving lateral alignment during the flare will also help keep the touchdown point within tighter centreline tolerances, supporting a higher overall score.
