Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,034 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 325 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 27 at La Rochelle-Île de Ré Airport (LFBH). The takeoff distance was 1,222 meters, which accounted for 83% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20°C, a wind speed of 11 knots at 259°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from La Rochelle-Île de Ré Airport, ascending from 839 feet above sea level to 37,250 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,411 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 70 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 35 miles southwest of Île d'Yeu Airport (LFEY), and it lasted for 40 minutes, covering a distance of 273 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 2 miles west of Cacabelos, Spain, and it involved a descent from 37,669 feet above sea level to 1,554 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,116 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 121 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 35 at Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport (LPPR) was made from the south, heading 349.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,350 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 35 at LPPR was successful, with a touchdown distance of 328 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 143 knots was slightly above the target speed, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -624 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.2 meters from the centreline, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 23°C, a wind speed of 5 knots at 290°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,404 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 8 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 470 nautical miles, and it took 102 minutes to complete, using 3,809 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport, with a final approach score of 91.2%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 349.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,350 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 35, which has a length of 3,034 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 146 kt, which may have been due to various factors such as wind resistance or the aircraft's weight.
The touchdown distance of 328 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown. However, the touchdown speed of 143 kt was a little fast, which may have contributed to the heavy touchdown rate of -624 feet per minute. A heavy touchdown rate can put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may affect the overall safety of the landing.
In terms of alignment, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 5 kt at 290°. The crosswind was 4 kt, while the headwind was 3 kt, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment.
The total landing distance of 1,404 meters was 46% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as pilot error or the aircraft's weight.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a score of 91.2%. However, there were some areas for improvement, including the slightly above-target threshold speed, the fast touchdown speed, and the heavy touchdown rate. Additionally, the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position and the runway rollout alignment may require further attention to ensure safe and efficient landings in the future.
