Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up, no landing flap set, off the centreline and speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: gear still up, no landing flap set, sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline, wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 3,486 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 3,486 m of the 3,989 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,306 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8, then departed from runway 22R at EBBE Beauvechain Air Base. The takeoff distance was 1,094 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 19°C temperature and 11-knot winds at 196 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 10 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile east of Grez-Doiceau, Wallonia, Belgium, and reached an altitude of 29,876 feet above sea level (asl) in 6 minutes, covering 25 nautical miles. This climb was from an initial altitude of 1,395 feet asl to a final altitude of 29,876 feet asl, an increase of 28,480 feet.
The enroute descent started overhead Goutroux, Wallonia, Belgium, and descended from 29,812 feet asl to 11,516 feet asl in 3 minutes, covering 20 nautical miles. Another enroute climb started 1 mile south of Liernu, Wallonia, Belgium, and climbed from 11,565 feet asl to 14,813 feet asl in 2 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles southwest of Heron, Wallonia, Belgium, and lasting 6 minutes, covering 33 nautical miles. However, this was followed by another enroute descent, which started 3 miles north of Bertogne, Wallonia, Belgium, and descended from 14,597 feet asl to 4,835 feet asl in 5 minutes, covering 17 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 2 miles east of Boulaide, Wiltz, Luxembourg, and lasting 50 minutes, covering 16 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute descent, which started 1 mile north of Selange, Wallonia, Belgium, and descended from 4,737 feet asl to 3,834 feet asl in 2 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting overhead Meispelt, Capellen, Luxembourg, and lasting 3 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles. However, this was followed by another enroute descent, which started overhead Berbourg, Grevenmacher, Luxembourg, and descended from 3,932 feet asl to 1,410 feet asl in 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24 at ELLX Luxembourg-Findel International Airport was from the north-east, heading 241.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 341 feet above ground level (agl). The landing on runway 24 was at a speed of 214 knots, which was excessively fast. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 14°C temperature and 7-knot winds at 170 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 3,369 meters, which accounted for 84% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 155 nautical miles, taking 41 minutes, and used 127 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 747-8 aircraft has successfully landed at ELLX Luxembourg-Findel International Airport, but the landing performance was not ideal. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 241.0° at 1 nm and 341 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 24, which has a length of 3,989 meters.
However, the landing performance was marred by several issues. The threshold height at 118 ft agl was excessively over target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than it should have been at the threshold of the runway. This could be due to a number of factors, including a high approach speed or a late start to the descent. The threshold speed was also excessively high at 234 kt, which is faster than the recommended speed for landing.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. This suggests that the aircraft was not aligned properly with the runway or that the pilot did not manage the descent and flare effectively. The touchdown speed of 214 kt was also excessively fast, which can increase the risk of a runway excursion or other safety issues. The touchdown rate of -272 fpm was fair, but not ideal.
Despite these issues, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned properly with the runway. The local weather conditions were also favorable, with a temperature of 14°C and a wind of 7 kt at 170°. The crosswind was 7 kt, while the headwind was 2 kt.
The total landing distance was 3,369 meters, which is 84% of the available runway. This is a relatively long landing distance, indicating that the aircraft took a long time to come to a stop after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot managed the rollout effectively and avoided any issues with the aircraft's alignment on the runway.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several issues with the landing performance that need to be addressed. The pilot should review the approach and landing to identify the causes of the problems and take steps to improve the performance in the future.
