Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,946 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,946 m of the 3,050 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,073 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777F, then departed from runway 18 at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF), with a takeoff distance of 1,316 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 178 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 5°C temperature and a wind speed of 3 knots at 229 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was also 2 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles west of Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany, where the aircraft climbed from 1,400 feet above sea level to 33,718 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,318 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 64 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles south-east of Hennef, Germany, and lasted for 175 minutes, covering a distance of 1,327 nautical miles. The aircraft then underwent another enroute climb, this time from 33,309 feet to 35,236 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,927 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again, this time at a latitude of 55.9440926 and a longitude of -29.632913, and lasted for 204 minutes, covering a distance of 1,502 nautical miles.
The aircraft then underwent another enroute climb, this time from 36,264 feet to 37,958 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,694 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again, this time 30 miles north-east of Rivière Témiscamie Airport, and lasted for 74 minutes, covering a distance of 583 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles north-east of Paris, Ontario, Canada. The descent was from 38,289 feet above sea level to 6,961 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,328 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again, this time 4 miles east of Roseville, Michigan, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile west of Fraser, Michigan. The descent was from 6,546 feet above sea level to 2,070 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,476 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22R at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) was from the north-east, with a heading of 208.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,424 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 22R, which was 3,050 meters long, was slightly off-target, with the touchdown point being 633 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 159 knots, which was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -219 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 1°C temperature and a wind speed of 3 knots at 340 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was also 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,842 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took
The Boeing 777F aircraft successfully landed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) on runway 22R, but the landing was not without some issues. The final approach was initiated from the northeast, heading 208.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,424 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down 633 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot.
The threshold height at 125 feet agl was excessively over target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than it should have been at the point of touchdown. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 181 knots, which could have contributed to the aircraft's excessive height and subsequent touchdown beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 159 knots was also a little fast, which may have added to the aircraft's distance from the ideal touchdown point.
Despite these issues, the touchdown rate was fair at -219 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 1°C and winds of 3 knots at 340°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 2 knots, which suggests that the aircraft was not significantly affected by wind during the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,842 meters, which is 60% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not excessively so. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment with the runway during the rollout phase of the landing.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, it was still a successful one. The aircraft was able to touch down safely, and the pilot was able to maintain control throughout the landing. However, there are some areas for improvement, including reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed, and improving the threshold height.
