Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,997 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,234 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL). The takeoff distance was 4,162 feet, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 154 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 49°F and winds of 16 knots at 321°. The crosswind component was 12 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. As the aircraft climbed, it encountered a significant increase in altitude, rising from 2,024 feet above sea level to 38,108 feet above sea level in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 105 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started overhead College Park, Georgia, and continued until the aircraft reached its cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise then began 3 miles northwest of Bronwood, Georgia, and lasted for 20 minutes, covering a distance of 136 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 14 miles southwest of the Sylvanmir Farms Airport Keaton Beach in Florida. The descent from 38,102 feet above sea level to 3,430 feet above sea level took 29 minutes, covering a distance of 160 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting overhead the Lowe's Airport Sarasota in Florida. However, this phase was short-lived, lasting only 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 3 miles southeast of the Hidden River Airport Sarasota. The descent from 2,992 feet above sea level to 1,870 feet above sea level took only 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 4 miles southeast of the I-10 Helistop Winfield in Florida. This phase lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 32 at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (KSRQ), approaching from the southeast at a heading of 314.0° and at an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 32 was characterized by a touchdown point that was 872 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 144 knots, which was faster than the target speed. However, the touchdown rate was good at -185 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 28 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 64°F and winds of 8 knots at 310°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,419 feet, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 34 feet from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 434 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 94 minutes. The aircraft used 7,941 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KSRQ Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southeast, heading 314.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with a runway length of 6,997 feet, which provided a sufficient margin for the landing.
However, the threshold height at 57 feet agl was slightly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was not perfectly aligned with the runway. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target at 154 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was descending at a faster rate than intended. The touchdown point was 872 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 144 knots was also faster than the target, resulting in a higher touchdown rate. Fortunately, the touchdown rate was good at -185 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of landing smoothly. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the deviations in the landing parameters.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 8 knots at 310°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 7 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing. The total landing distance was 4,419 feet, which is 63% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 34 feet from the centreline, which may have been a result of the initial misalignment during the touchdown. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the aircraft was able to safely touch down and come to a stop within the available runway length.
