Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,101 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,101 m of the 3,661 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 795 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, taking approximately 9 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 17, with the aircraft lifting off after covering 54% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 1,320 meters, and the liftoff speed was 156 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of -4°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 210 degrees. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. The enroute climb began approximately 1 mile south of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from an initial altitude of 1,848 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 34,119 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 138 nautical miles and took 16 minutes to complete.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles east of Ellsworth, Minnesota. This phase lasted for 39 minutes and covered a distance of 656 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 4 miles south of Diamondville, Wyoming. The descent phase took 14 minutes to complete, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 34,457 feet above sea level to 5,529 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 81 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached Salt Lake City International Airport, it began its final approach to runway 16L from the north, heading at 175.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on runway 16L, which had a length of 3,661 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was 143 knots. The touchdown point was 387 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 133 knots and a touchdown rate of -188 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 5°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 0 degrees. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 2,028 meters, which was 55% of the runway's length. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 884 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 83 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,338 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Salt Lake City International Airport (KSLC) on runway 16L, achieving a high score of 92.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 175.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a steady course, aligning perfectly with the runway touchdown zone.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 387 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 133 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -188 feet per minute (fpm) was also satisfactory, demonstrating a gentle and stable landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 5°C and a negligible wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 0°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 0 knots and a slight tailwind of 1 knot, which did not significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 2,028 meters was 55% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the aircraft maintained a stable and controlled trajectory during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was executed well, with the aircraft demonstrating a high degree of control and stability throughout the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases. The minor deviation from the touchdown zone and the relatively short landing distance are the only areas for improvement, but overall, the landing was a success.
