Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,652 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 446 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Embraer E175 aircraft took off from runway 27L at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, covering 41% of the runway's length in a takeoff distance of 1,401 meters. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 154 knots, with a local temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and wind conditions of 22 knots at 210 degrees. The crosswind was 19 knots, while the headwind was 11 knots.
As the aircraft began its enroute climb, it started 1 mile north of Bensenville, Illinois, and climbed from an altitude of 1,715 feet above sea level to 30,013 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,298 feet in 12 minutes. The climb covered a distance of 86 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 3 miles east of 58WI Geo Jensen Airport in Frederic, Wisconsin, and lasted for 20 minutes, covering 448 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 8 miles northwest of KRRT Warroad International Memorial Airport in Warroad, Minnesota, and descended from 29,949 feet above sea level to 2,173 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,777 feet in 17 minutes. The descent covered a distance of 83 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31 at CYWG Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport was made from the southeast, heading 319.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,383 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 31 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 449 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 153 knots was too fast, and the touchdown rate of -270 feet per minute was fair. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather at the time of landing was -12 degrees Celsius, with wind conditions of 36 knots at 330 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 35 knots. The total landing distance was 1,048 meters, which was 40% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile in 3 minutes. The total flight distance was 625 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 61 minutes. The aircraft used 2,826 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Embraer E175 aircraft successfully landed at Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG) with a score of 95.5%. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 319.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,383 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on runway 31, which has a length of 2,652 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was too high at 156 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to maintain a higher speed during the approach, but it's essential to adhere to the recommended speeds to ensure a smooth touchdown.
The touchdown distance was good, measuring 449 meters, which is within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed was slightly too fast at 153 knots. This could be attributed to the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed during the approach. The touchdown rate was fair at -270 feet per minute (fpm), which is a reasonable rate considering the aircraft's weight and the runway conditions.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -12°C and a wind speed of 36 knots from 330°. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 35 knots. The pilots successfully managed the crosswind and headwind conditions, ensuring a stable approach and touchdown.
The total landing distance was 1,048 meters, which is approximately 40% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Embraer E175 aircraft performed well during the landing at CYWG, with the pilots demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft throughout the approach and touchdown phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of adhering to recommended speeds and touchdown rates.
