Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,932 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,932 m of the 3,034 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 687 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 06 at LEIB Ibiza Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,370 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 119°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The aircraft climbed to a height of 31,992 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,880 feet from the initial altitude of 1,112 feet. This climb took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 42 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started over LEIB Ibiza Airport, Ibiza (Eivissa), and continued until the aircraft reached a cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise began 29 miles northeast of Denia, Spain, and lasted for 56 minutes, covering a distance of 342 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent 2 miles northeast of Gallegos de Arganan, Spain. The descent took 26 minutes and covered a distance of 101 nautical miles, during which the aircraft decreased its altitude from 32,193 feet to 1,348 feet. The final approach to runway 17 at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 169.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,141 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 17 was successful, with the touchdown point being 272 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 129 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -149 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline, by 8.6 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 100°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,853 meters, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centerline, by 8.3 meters. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 494 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 109 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,026 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport, with a final approach score of 93.9%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 169.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,141 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot successfully landed the aircraft on runway 17, which has a length of 3,034 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed was also good, at 139 knots, which is a safe speed for landing. The touchdown point was 272 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly off-center but not excessively so. The touchdown speed was 129 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a smooth landing. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -149 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft touched down without any significant impact.
However, there were a few areas for improvement. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight drift during the rollout.
The local weather conditions were favorable for landing, with a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at 100°. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots, which is relatively light and should not have significantly impacted the landing. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were a few areas for improvement that the pilot should focus on in future landings. The total landing distance was 1,853 meters, which is 61% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop within a reasonable distance.
