Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,800 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 132 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Cotswold Airport, Kemble, Gloucestershire, England, the ICP Savannah S I-C019 began its takeoff roll on runway 26. The aircraft accelerated smoothly, reaching liftoff speed of 43 kt in a relatively short distance of 196 m, which accounted for only 12% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 15 °C and a gentle headwind of 1 kt from the west.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb, ascending from 632 ft above sea level to 663 ft in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nm. The climb was characterized by a steady rate of ascent, with the aircraft maintaining a consistent heading. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, maintaining a steady altitude and airspeed for 2 minutes while covering a distance of 2 nm. The cruise phase was a testament to the aircraft's efficient performance, with the pilot making the most of the available airspeed and altitude.
As the aircraft began its final approach to runway 08 at Cotswold Airport, it was aligned with the runway and descending at a rate of 111 ft above ground level. The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 29 kt and a distance of 303 m, which accounted for only 19% of the available runway length. The touchdown rate was an impressive -68 fpm, indicating a high degree of control and precision. Following touchdown, the aircraft rolled out to a stop, maintaining perfect alignment with the runway. The total landing distance was 417 m, which was a mere 26% of the available runway length. The flight, which covered a total distance of 7 nm, was completed in 13 minutes and consumed a total of 2 kg of fuel.
The aircraft, ICP Savannah S I-C019, successfully executed a flawless final approach to runway 08 at EGBP Cotswold Airport from the west, aligning with the runway at a heading of 78.0° at 0 nm and 111 ft above ground level. The approach quality was exceptional, with a good threshold height achieved, allowing the pilot to maintain a precise control over the aircraft's descent. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 35 kt, but this did not compromise the overall performance of the landing.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, it demonstrated a good touchdown distance of 303 m, with a speed of 29 kt that was well within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate of -68 fpm was particularly impressive, showcasing the pilot's skill in controlling the aircraft's descent and maintaining a stable approach. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway, and the local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a gentle tailwind of 1 kt, contributed to a smooth and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 417 m, which accounted for only 26% of the runway length, was a testament to the pilot's expertise in executing a precise and controlled landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was scored 100.0%, reflecting the exceptional quality of the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases.
