Settle the descent rate
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate 1,552 fpm, more than the glideslope needed and speed 31 kt FAST on the reference speed of 132 kt.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 324 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A380-800 taxied to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport and commenced the departure roll. The aircraft achieved a takeoff distance of 1,095 m, representing 30 % of the runway, and lifted off at 162 kt. Local conditions were a temperature of 16 °C with a wind of 7 kt from 250°, giving a headwind component of 7 kt and no cross-wind.
During the en-route climb the aircraft departed the vicinity of NZAA, climbing from 1,019 ft asl to 1,545 ft asl, an increase of 526 ft achieved in 1 minute while covering 4 nm.
Level cruise began 2 nm south of NZAA and was maintained for 4 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 12 nm.
The final approach to runway 23L at NZAA involved a descent from 1,709 ft agl to 75 ft agl in 92 seconds, and the aircraft scored on the stabilisation gates. Weather at the time was a temperature of 14 °C, wind 6 kt from 234°, providing a headwind component of 6 kt and a cross-wind of 2 kt.
Landing was executed on runway 23L, whose length is 3,671 m, with a good threshold height. The threshold speed was slightly above target at 141 kt. Touchdown occurred 323 m down the runway at a speed of 135 kt, with a heavy touchdown rate of minus 632 fpm and a lateral deviation of 7.9 m from the centreline. The total landing distance measured 911 m, equivalent to 25 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was very good.
In total the flight covered 22 nm, taking 8, and consumed 116,678 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1,709 ft agl to 75 ft agl in 92 seconds, maintaining the required parameters throughout the approach and achieving a score of 85.0 %.
At threshold the speed was slightly above target at 141 kt and the aircraft crossed the threshold at a good height. The touchdown point was 323 m down the runway and the speed at touchdown was 135 kt, both recorded as good.
Touchdown was characterised by a heavy rate of descent measured at minus 632 fpm and a runway touchdown position misaligned by 7.9 m from the centreline. The total landing distance was 911 m, representing 25 % of the 3,671 m runway length.
Rollout alignment was very good, with the aircraft remaining on centreline through the deceleration phase. Local weather was 14 °C with wind 6 kt from 234°, including a 2 kt crosswind component and a 6 kt headwind.
To reduce the heavy touchdown rate, a slightly flatter flare should be practiced to achieve a lighter arrest of descent. Refining the final heading to bring the aircraft within a tighter tolerance of the centreline will further improve touchdown alignment.
