Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,225 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,225 ft of the 9,473 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,008 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18L at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The takeoff distance was 6,069 feet, which was 45% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 190 degrees. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The climb took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 153 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,565 feet above sea level to 38,878 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,314 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles south of Sandy Ridge Farms Ashdown in Arkansas. This phase lasted for 89 minutes and covered a distance of 759 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles west of Lexington Airport in Virginia. The descent took 37 minutes and covered a distance of 251 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 38,550 feet above sea level to 3,021 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,529 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south of Glassboro in New Jersey. This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile southeast of Ellisburg in New Jersey. The descent took 3 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 2,837 feet above sea level to 1,326 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,511 feet.
The final approach to runway 27R at KPHL Philadelphia International Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 255.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,301 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 27R, which had a length of 9,473 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 650 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -147 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 43 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 220 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,967 feet, which was 52% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,195 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 167 minutes. The aircraft used 13,095 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL) on runway 27R. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 255.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,301 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a smooth descent, with a touchdown point located 650 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone.
The touchdown speed of 134 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating a slightly fast approach. However, the touchdown rate of -147 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting a well-controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 43°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 220°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was also 2 knots. These conditions contributed to a relatively stable and predictable landing environment.
The total landing distance of 4,967 feet was 52% of the available runway length of 9,473 feet. This indicates that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for a safe stop, even with a slightly fast touchdown speed. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a score of 98.2%. The aircraft's performance was well within acceptable limits, and the crew demonstrated good control and decision-making skills throughout the approach and landing phases.
