Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,764 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 957 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A319 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Dane County Regional Truax Field, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 18, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 142 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 34°F, with a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 250°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile north of Monona, Wisconsin. The climb took place from an altitude of 1,904 feet above sea level to 10,941 feet above sea level, an increase of 9,037 feet in just 6 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles northwest of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and lasting for 22 minutes as it covered a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 9 miles northwest of New Buffalo, Michigan, where the aircraft descended from 10,790 feet above sea level to 9,006 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,785 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 18 miles northwest of Michigan City, Indiana, and lasting for 3 minutes as it covered a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final descent began 13 miles east of Near North Side, Illinois, where the aircraft descended from 8,735 feet above sea level to 1,939 feet above sea level, a decrease of 6,796 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 28C at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, flying from the east at a heading of 270.0°, 4 nautical miles from the runway and at an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level.
The landing took place on runway 28C, which had a length of 10,764 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 127 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 955 feet, and the touchdown speed was 121 knots, which was also satisfactory. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -498 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 37°F, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 290°.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 17 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 185 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 69 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,176 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed on runway 28C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, achieving a high score of 96.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's final approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 127 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 955 feet, which is within the expected range. The touchdown speed of 121 knots was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. However, the touchdown rate was slightly hard, at -498 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slight loss of control during the landing phase.
Despite the hard touchdown rate, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 37°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 290°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing phase.
The total landing distance of 3,373 feet was 31% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently, with a good runway rollout alignment. Overall, the landing was well-executed, with a high score and minimal deviations from the expected performance.
