Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,635 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 250 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A319 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, taking 11 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 26L, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 156 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 19 °C, with a wind speed of 16 knots from a direction of 250 °.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed overhead College Park, Georgia, and began its ascent from an altitude of 2,087 feet above sea level to 38,092 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,005 feet in 12 minutes and covering a distance of 110 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile east of Mark Anton Dayton Airport in Tennessee and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 244 nautical miles.
As the aircraft began its descent, it started 2 miles northeast of Solenberg Airport in Indiana and descended from an altitude of 37,295 feet above sea level to 1,901 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,394 feet in 22 minutes and covering a distance of 158 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 31C at Chicago Midway International Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 314.0 ° at an altitude of 1,283 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 31C was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 122 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown distance was 252 meters, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6 °C, with a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 280 °.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 4 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 522 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 60 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 3,601 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed on runway 31C at KMDW Chicago Midway International Airport, achieving a score of 99.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 314.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,283 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 128 knots, which is within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed of 122 knots was slightly faster than desired, indicating that the pilot may have needed to apply more braking force upon touchdown. The touchdown rate of -263 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft's descent was not excessively steep.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 280°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,056 meters was 65% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot was able to maintain a high degree of control and precision during the landing. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to smoothly and safely bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated a high level of skill and proficiency. However, the slightly fast touchdown speed and fair touchdown rate suggest that there may be opportunities for improvement in the future.
