Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,185 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,181 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 14 at Republic Airport, KFRG, where the aircraft, a Magni M24 Plus White, successfully took off after covering a distance of 576 feet, which accounted for 9% of the runway. The liftoff speed was recorded at 49 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 310 degrees, resulting in a 5-knot tailwind.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 19 minutes and covered a distance of 19 nautical miles. This phase began overhead East Farmingdale, New York, and provided a brief respite before the aircraft began its descent towards John F. Kennedy International Airport, KJFK.
Upon approaching KJFK, the aircraft landed on runway 13R, which had a length of 9,185 feet. However, the threshold height at 97 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 55 knots. The touchdown point was located 1,168 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was recorded at 18 knots, which was considered good. Unfortunately, the touchdown rate was hard, with a rate of -422 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 30 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 39 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 272 degrees, resulting in a 3-knot crosswind and a 5-knot tailwind. Despite the challenging conditions, the aircraft successfully completed the flight, covering a total distance of 20 nautical miles in 21 minutes and consuming 0 pounds of fuel.
The Magni M24 Plus White aircraft successfully landed on runway 13R at John F Kennedy International Airport (KJFK), but the landing was not without its challenges. The aircraft scored a 52.5% on this landing, indicating that there were some areas for improvement.
One of the main issues with this landing was the threshold height, which was significantly above the target height of 97 ft agl. This suggests that the aircraft may have been too high on approach, which could have made it difficult to control the descent and touch down smoothly. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 55 kn, which is above the recommended speed for landing. This could have put additional stress on the aircraft and made it more difficult to control.
Despite these challenges, the aircraft touched down at a relatively low speed of 18 kn, which is good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -422 fpm, which suggests that the aircraft may have hit the ground with a bit too much force. This could have been due to the high threshold speed and the difficulty in controlling the descent.
Another issue with this landing was the runway touchdown position, which was misaligned by 30 ft from the centreline. This suggests that the aircraft may have been slightly off course on approach, which could have made it difficult to land smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 39 °F and winds of 6 kn at 272 °. The crosswind was relatively light at 3 kn, but the tailwind was slightly stronger at 5 kn. These conditions may have made it slightly more difficult to control the aircraft on approach, but they were not extreme enough to significantly impact the landing.
Overall, while the Magni M24 Plus White aircraft successfully landed on runway 13R at KJFK, there were some areas for improvement. The high threshold height and speed, hard touchdown rate, and misaligned runway touchdown position all suggest that the pilot may need to work on their approach and landing technique to achieve a smoother and more controlled landing.
