Bonn-Hangelar Airfield (EDKB) lies just northeast of Bonn in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and ranks among the oldest operational airfields in the region. Today it is a lively general aviation base combining motorised and glider flight training with regional emergency and helicopter operations, and it has recently gained a detailed freeware scenery package for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Overview

Bonn-Hangelar is a small general aviation airfield situated to the northeast of the city of Bonn. It has a long pedigree stretching back to the early twentieth century and has passed through military and civil roles over the decades. For the simulator pilot it offers an interesting mix of a hard-surfaced main runway alongside a lit grass strip, plus a genuine sense of place given its history and current mix of flying training, helicopter movements and Federal Police operations.

Airspace & Location

The field is located northeast of Bonn, at coordinates 50.7688N, 7.1640E, at an elevation of 197 feet. It sits within German airspace under the oversight of Langen Information, which provides flight information service in the area.

Runways

Bonn-Hangelar has two physical runways. The main runway, 11/29, is 2617 feet long with a hard surface. Alongside it runs 11L/29R, a 2217-foot grass runway that is lit. There is no ILS approach available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Bonn-Hangelar Radio provides an information service on 135.155 MHz. Langen Information, the wider area flight information service, can be reached on 123.525 MHz. There are no published instrument approaches at the airfield.

History

Bonn-Hangelar is one of the oldest operational airfields in the region, originally established in the early twentieth century. Over its history it has served a range of purposes, moving between military and civil aviation roles.

The Airfield Today

The airfield today functions as a hub for both motorised and glider flight training, and also supports regional emergency services and helicopter activity. It has separate civil and Federal Police aprons. A detailed freeware scenery package for Bonn-Hangelar, featuring accurate runway, taxiway and apron layouts, custom night lighting and static aircraft with local liveries, has been released for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
