Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,188 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,784 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 30L at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (KMSP). The takeoff distance was 2,895 feet, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 137 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 25°F temperature and a 7-knot headwind. The aircraft climbed from 1,827 feet above sea level to 33,185 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,358 feet, in 13 minutes and covering 74 nautical miles. The enroute climb started overhead the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.
After reaching its cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted 36 minutes and covered 267 nautical miles. This phase started 1 mile northeast of Altura, Minnesota. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 2 miles southeast of Martinton, Illinois. The descent from 33,119 feet above sea level to 4,698 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,421 feet, took 18 minutes and covered 87 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles. This phase started 2 miles east of Zionsville, Indiana. The aircraft then began another descent, which started overhead the Westfield Airport in Indiana. The descent from 4,652 feet above sea level to 4,035 feet above sea level, a decrease of 617 feet, took 2 minutes and covered 5 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles. This phase started overhead Carmel, Indiana. The aircraft then began another descent, which started 5 miles west of Lawrence, Indiana. The descent from 3,975 feet above sea level to 2,054 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,920 feet, took 4 minutes and covered 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23R at the Indianapolis International Airport (KIND) was made from the northeast, heading 225.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,309 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, which was 11,188 feet long. The threshold height was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 420 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 133 knots, which was fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -291 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 32°F temperature and a 12-knot tailwind.
The total landing distance was 4,280 feet, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 461 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 90 minutes. The aircraft used 7,170 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KIND Indianapolis International Airport on runway 23R. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 225.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,309 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was evaluated, and it scored an overall rating of 88.4%.
The aircraft's approach to the runway was satisfactory, with the threshold height being slightly above the target at 59 feet agl. However, the threshold speed was significantly above the target at 137 knots, indicating that the aircraft was descending at a faster rate than intended. This could be attributed to the aircraft's configuration or the pilot's decision to descend more aggressively.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 420 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. The touchdown speed of 133 knots was also faster than the target speed, resulting in a touchdown rate of -291 feet per minute (fpm), which was considered fair. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°F and a wind speed of 12 knots from 319°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 12 knots and a tailwind component of 1 knot. The total landing distance of 4,280 feet was 38% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment with the runway centerline was slightly off by 29 feet. This could be attributed to the pilot's decision to apply brakes or the aircraft's configuration. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with some areas for improvement, such as reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed.
