Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: wings not level.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 917 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 917 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 249 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Pilatus PC-24 with the registration N971LY, then departed from runway 24 at LSZC Buochs Airport. The takeoff distance was 772 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 105 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees. There was no crosswind, but a headwind of 1 knot was present. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead the town of Stans in the Kanton Nidwalden, Switzerland. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 2,477 feet above sea level to 14,006 feet above sea level, an increase of 11,529 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles south of Fluehli in the Kanton Luzern, Switzerland, where the aircraft descended from 14,007 feet above sea level to 6,376 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,631 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 23 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 2 miles southwest of Diemtigen in the Canton de Berne, Switzerland. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 6,054 feet above sea level to 9,594 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,540 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles east of Lenk in the Canton de Berne, Switzerland, where the aircraft descended from 9,527 feet above sea level to 4,249 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,278 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead the town of Zweisimmen in the Canton de Berne, Switzerland, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 14 at LSTS Sankt Stephan Airfield was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 134.0 degrees at an altitude of 170 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 14, which had a length of 917 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 119 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 251 meters, and the touchdown speed was 110 knots, which was also good. The touchdown rate was good at -185 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees. There was a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 741 meters, which accounted for 81% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 62 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 26 minutes. The aircraft used 278 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Pilatus PC-24 aircraft, registered as N971LY, successfully landed at Sankt Stephan Airfield, with a final approach score of 91.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north-west, heading 134.0° at an altitude of 170 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed on runway 14, which has a length of 917 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 119 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 251 meters, and the touchdown speed of 110 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -185 feet per minute (fpm) was also reported as good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and tailwind component, making the landing conditions relatively straightforward. The total landing distance was 741 meters, which is 81% of the runway length, indicating a good utilization of the available runway space.
However, there were some minor issues with the landing alignment. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.2 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centerline. These minor deviations from the centerline may require some adjustments to the aircraft's approach and landing procedures to achieve a more precise alignment. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
