Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 503 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 503 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 13 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 01 at AYOZ Kora Airstrip. The Kodiak 100 aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 311 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 64 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from 229 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 4 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airstrip, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead AYOZ Kora Airstrip. The climb was from an initial altitude of 5,725 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 12,979 feet above sea level, an increase of 7,254 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. This rapid climb was a testament to the aircraft's performance capabilities.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 7 miles north of AYHX Herowena Airstrip. This cruise phase lasted for 6 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 3 miles east of AYGD Gimi Airstrip Amusa. The descent was from an altitude of 13,388 feet above sea level to 8,730 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,658 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of AYQM Simogu Airstrip. This cruise phase lasted for 2 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 3 miles south-east of AYQM Simogu Airstrip. The descent was from an altitude of 8,424 feet above sea level to 4,706 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,718 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at AYQM Simogu Airstrip was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 168.0 degrees at an altitude of -97 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 16, which had a length of 503 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 60 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 8 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 60 knots. The touchdown rate was perfect at 56 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots from 241 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 239 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 49 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 25 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 62 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft in question, a Kodiak 100, successfully landed at AYQM Simogu Airstrip, achieving an impressive score of 88.6%. The final approach to runway 16 was initiated from the north, with a heading of 168.0° at an altitude of 0 nm and -97 ft above ground level (agl). The pilot successfully navigated the aircraft onto the runway, taking advantage of the good threshold height.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly below the target threshold speed of 60 kt, but still within an acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 8 m was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 60 kt was also good, and the touchdown rate of 56 fpm was perfect, demonstrating a high degree of precision and control.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft landing 4.2 m off the centreline. This may be attributed to the crosswind, which was blowing at 5 kt from the west. Despite this, the local weather conditions were generally favorable, with a temperature of 21 °C and a relatively light wind of 5 kt at 241°.
The total landing distance of 239 m was 47% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot demonstrating a high degree of skill and precision in navigating the aircraft onto the runway and bringing it to a safe stop.
