Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,443 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 548 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 07 at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport, where the Cessna Skyhawk took off with a takeoff distance of 382 meters, which is 16% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 70 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 22°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 349°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it quickly gained altitude, rising from 419 feet above sea level to 671 feet in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This initial climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which lasted for 11 minutes and covered a distance of 16 nautical miles, with the aircraft flying 1 mile south east of Santo Spirito.
The flight then entered another climb phase, this time from 1 mile north east of Corato, where the aircraft climbed from 824 feet to 2,121 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. Following this climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 7 minutes and covered a distance of 14 nautical miles, with the aircraft flying 2 miles south west of Corato.
As the flight approached its final destination, the aircraft began its descent, making a final approach to runway 07 at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport from the south west, flying at a heading of 69.0° and at an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07, which has a length of 2,443 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good, at 61 knots.
The touchdown point was 108 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 52 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -107 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned, being 23.2 meters off the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 349°.
The total landing distance was 766 meters, which is 31% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned, being 22.9 meters off the centerline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 4 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 39 nautical miles, taking 27 minutes, and used 10 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed at LIBD Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport, achieving an overall score of 80.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 69.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a smooth final approach, maintaining a good threshold height and achieving a threshold speed of 61 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 108 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 52 knots. The touchdown rate was also smooth, at -107 feet per minute (fpm). However, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned from the centerline, deviating by 23.2 meters. This misalignment was also observed during the runway rollout, where the aircraft was 22.9 meters off-centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from 349°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 766 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway length. Despite the misalignment issues, the pilot demonstrated good control and a smooth touchdown, contributing to the overall score of 80.5%.
