Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,670 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 99 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna Longitude, then departed from runway 01R at Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The takeoff distance was 785 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 133 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and a wind speed of 16 knots at 30°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 15 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile north of Paradise, Nevada, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 2,706 feet above sea level to 41,008 feet above sea level, an increase of 38,301 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 137 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 17 miles northwest of Devil's Track Airport (KGRM) in Grand Marais, Arizona, and lasted for 54 minutes, covering a distance of 254 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 5 miles south of Crawford, Colorado, and descended from 40,778 feet above sea level to 6,889 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,889 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 160 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile northeast of Brighton Van-Aire Estates Airport (CO12) in Brighton, Colorado, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 16L at Denver International Airport (KDEN) was made from the north, heading 181.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,296 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 16L was successful, with a touchdown distance of 99 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 106 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -201 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were -4°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 170°, with a crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind component of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,136 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 565 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 128 minutes. The aircraft used 2,028 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna Longitude successfully landed on runway 16L at KDEN Denver International Airport, achieving a high score of 97.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 181.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,296 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 108 knots, indicating a controlled descent. The touchdown distance of 99 meters was also good, suggesting that the pilot had a solid grasp of the aircraft's speed and altitude. The touchdown speed of 106 knots was within the acceptable range, further emphasizing the pilot's skill.
However, the touchdown rate of -201 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating that the pilot could have managed the descent more smoothly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, which is a testament to the pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft safely.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -4°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from 170°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 7 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach.
The total landing distance of 1,136 meters was 31% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Cessna Longitude's landing on runway 16L at KDEN Denver International Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
