Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,184 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,768 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 25R at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX). The takeoff distance was 4,671 feet, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 65°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 200°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead KLAX. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,098 feet above sea level to 34,997 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,899 feet, in 20 minutes and covering a distance of 128 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 11 miles west of Fort Irwin Airport (KFOW). This phase lasted for 158 minutes and covered a distance of 1,358 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from an altitude of 35,230 feet above sea level to 37,026 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,796 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering a distance of 15 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles south west of Hildreth Air Park (96IS). This phase lasted for 38 minutes and covered a distance of 339 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its descent phase, which started 8 miles west of Mannington (West Virginia). The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 37,004 feet above sea level to 1,433 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,571 feet, in 31 minutes and covering a distance of 168 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,404 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 01 at KDCA was successful, with the aircraft touching down 414 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target speed at 147 knots, while the touchdown rate was fair at -209 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 48°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 340°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,793 feet, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took just 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,017 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 263 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 22,268 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) on runway 01. The final approach was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,404 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 147 knots, indicating a slight over-speed. However, the touchdown speed of 138 knots was a little fast, which may have resulted in a slightly longer landing distance. The touchdown rate of -209 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating a relatively smooth touchdown.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, which is essential for a safe and controlled landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 48°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 340°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which helped to reduce the landing distance.
The total landing distance of 3,793 feet was 53% of the runway length, which is a relatively short landing distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop within a short distance.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a score of 98.8%. The slight over-speed and fast touchdown speed were minor issues, but the aircraft's good threshold height, smooth touchdown, and perfect runway rollout alignment made up for these minor deviations.
