Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,193 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,193 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 200 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 08 at EHTE Teuge Airport, a small airport located in the Netherlands. The aircraft, a DA40-XLS, accelerated down the runway and lifted off the ground at a speed of 56 knots. The takeoff distance was a relatively short 103 meters, which accounted for only 9% of the runway's total length.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 17 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind blowing at 3 knots from a direction of 150 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was a mere 1 knot. The pilot successfully navigated the aircraft through this wind, and the climb was smooth and steady.
The enroute climb phase of the flight began overhead Teuge, a town located in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. From an initial altitude of 339 feet above sea level, the aircraft climbed to 786 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This impressive climb rate was a testament to the aircraft's performance capabilities.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This brief period of steady flight allowed the pilot to assess the aircraft's performance and make any necessary adjustments.
As the flight progressed, the pilot began the final approach to runway 08 at EHTE Teuge Airport. The approach was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 85 degrees and flying at an altitude of 177 feet above ground level. The pilot expertly guided the aircraft onto the runway, using the available wind conditions to their advantage.
The landing itself was smooth and controlled, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 50 knots. The touchdown distance was a respectable 198 meters, which accounted for only 39% of the runway's total length. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop without any issues.
The total landing distance was 471 meters, and the pilot was able to maintain perfect runway rollout alignment. The flight had used a total of 2 kilograms of fuel, and the total distance traveled was 3 nautical miles. The entire flight had lasted 4 minutes, and the pilot had successfully completed a challenging and demanding flight.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EHTE Teuge Airport, achieving a high score of 99.2%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 85.0° at an altitude of 177 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a steady course, aligning perfectly with the runway threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly below the target threshold speed of 63 knots, registering at 63 kt. However, this did not affect the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown distance of 198 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 50 kt was also within acceptable limits. The rate of descent was smooth, with a rate of -105 feet per minute (fpm).
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots at 150°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 kt, while the headwind component was 1 kt. These conditions contributed to a stable and controlled approach.
The total landing distance of 471 meters was 39% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing phase. Overall, the DA40-XLS aircraft performed well, and the landing was considered successful.
