Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 500 ft gate: speed 19 kt FAST on the reference speed of 130 kt.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,997 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 407 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, the Airbus A321 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft lined up on runway 23, it was cleared for departure, and the takeoff roll commenced. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 153 knots, lifting off the ground after covering 1,303 meters, or 47% of the runway's length.
As the aircraft climbed away from Hamburg, it encountered a local weather pattern characterized by a temperature of 14°C and a gentle headwind of 5 knots from a direction of 140°. The enroute climb phase began approximately 1 mile northwest of Winterhude, Germany, and continued for 19 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,068 feet above sea level to 37,999 feet, an increase of 36,931 feet. The climb phase covered a distance of 118 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted 36 minutes and covered 251 nautical miles, starting approximately 1 mile west of Tweede Exloermond, Netherlands.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent phase, starting overhead Stock, England, and continuing for 25 minutes, during which it descended from 38,048 feet to 5,007 feet, a decrease of 33,041 feet. The descent phase covered a distance of 124 nautical miles. Following a brief level cruise phase, the aircraft began its final descent, starting 2 miles west of Kingston Seymour, England, and continuing for 3 minutes, during which it descended from 5,012 feet to 1,900 feet, a decrease of 3,113 feet. The aircraft then lined up for a final approach to runway 09 at Bristol Airport, touching down on the runway after covering a distance of 417 meters. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target speed, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The total flight distance was 512 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 3,839 kilograms of fuel during the journey, which took approximately 89 minutes.
The final approach to runway 09 at EGGD Bristol Airport from the west was executed with precision, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 87.0° at 4 nm and 1,279 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with the threshold height at 59 ft agl being slightly above the target. However, the threshold speed was well within acceptable limits at 130 kt, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent rate.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown distance of 417 m was within the expected range, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway centerline. The touchdown speed of 131 kt was a little fast, but the firm touchdown rate of -347 fpm suggests that the aircraft's wheels were firmly planted on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 12 °C and a wind of 16 kt at 159°, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing.
The rollout phase was smooth, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout. The overall performance of the landing was satisfactory, with a score of 95.5%. While there were some minor deviations from the ideal, the crew's skills and the aircraft's capabilities ensured a safe and controlled landing.
