Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,006 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 541 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 04 at Enrique Malek International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,172 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, with no wind. The aircraft then took off and began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile south of David in Panama. The climb was from an initial altitude of 1,119 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 37,721 feet, an increase of 36,601 feet in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 202 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles southwest of MRTG Taboga Airport in Costa Rica. This phase lasted for 150 minutes and covered a distance of 1,054 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 10 miles north of MMJL Pista de Jalpan in Mexico. The descent was from a maximum altitude of 38,362 feet to an altitude of 8,565 feet, a decrease of 29,797 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 4 miles northeast of MMSP Ponciano Arriaga International Airport in Mexico. This phase lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 14 at MMSP Ponciano Arriaga International Airport was from the northwest, with a heading of 149.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,297 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 14 was successful, with a touchdown point 128 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 132 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -222 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 50 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,177 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,365 nautical miles, which was covered in 181 minutes. The aircraft used 8,299 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at MMSP Ponciano Arriaga International Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the northwest, heading 149.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,297 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach to runway 14 was executed with a high degree of precision, with the aircraft maintaining a good threshold height and speed. The threshold speed of 140 knots was well within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot had a good understanding of the aircraft's performance and was able to manage its speed effectively. The touchdown point was 128 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation and does not indicate any significant issues with the landing.
The touchdown speed of 132 knots was also within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilot had a good feel for the aircraft's speed and was able to bring it down smoothly. However, the touchdown rate of -222 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating that the pilot may have been able to improve the rate at which the aircraft touched down. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had a good understanding of the aircraft's orientation and was able to align it with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 50°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots, which did not pose any significant challenges for the pilot. The total landing distance of 1,177 meters was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance and indicates that the pilot had a good understanding of the aircraft's performance and was able to bring it down smoothly.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had a good understanding of the aircraft's orientation and was able to maintain its alignment with the runway during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and professionalism, and the pilot demonstrated a good understanding of the aircraft's performance and the local weather conditions.
