Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 570 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, taking approximately 4 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 35L, with the aircraft lifting off after covering 44% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 1,782 meters, and the liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 10°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 61°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Pusignan, France, and the aircraft ascended from 1,804 feet above sea level to 35,192 feet, an increase of 33,388 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 112 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 2 miles east of Heitenried, Switzerland, and lasted for 45 minutes, covering 313 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent from 34,556 feet above sea level to 2,877 feet, a decrease of 31,678 feet in 20 minutes, covering 107 nautical miles. The descent started overhead Naumburg, Germany.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting overhead Gruenheide, Germany, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles. The final descent began 1 mile east of Muggelheim, Germany, and the aircraft descended from 2,486 feet above sea level to 1,449 feet, a decrease of 1,036 feet in 2 minutes, covering 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24L at Berlin Brandenburg Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 249.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,272 feet above ground level. The landing took place on the 3,986-meter-long runway, with the threshold height being good. The threshold speed was slightly above the target at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 142 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 132 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -276 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and a wind speed of 24 knots at 260°, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 23 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,266 meters, which was 32% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 7 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 547 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 1 hour and 47 minutes, using 4,099 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at EDDB Berlin Brandenburg Airport on runway 24L, achieving a score of 94.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 249.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed on a runway with a length of 3,986 meters, and the threshold height was reported as good.
During the final approach, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target threshold speed of 144 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly faster touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 142 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was recorded at 132 knots, which is considered a little fast. However, the touchdown rate of -276 feet per minute (fpm) was deemed fair.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C, with a wind speed of 24 knots from 260°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 23 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's alignment during the landing. Despite this, the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 1,266 meters, which accounts for 32% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and come to a stop within a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent during the landing. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and stability during the landing process.
