Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,303 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,303 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 266 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 10 at Vance W. Amory International Airport, TKPN. The aircraft, a P180 FFX, took off with a takeoff distance of 330 meters, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 117 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 12 knots at 114 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Newcastle, Saint James Windward, Saint Kitts and Nevis. The climb from 1,081 feet above sea level to 5,588 feet above sea level was achieved in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. This climb was followed by a brief enroute level cruise, which lasted 3 minutes and covered 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 5,862 feet above sea level to 12,729 feet above sea level, over Nicola Town, Christ Church Nichola Town, Saint Kitts and Nevis. This climb took 5 minutes and covered 19 nautical miles.
The aircraft then started its enroute descent, beginning 5 miles west of Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands. The descent from 12,788 feet above sea level to 6,681 feet above sea level took 3 minutes and covered 15 nautical miles. Following this descent, the aircraft entered another enroute level cruise, which lasted 8 minutes and covered 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 21 miles southwest of Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands. The descent from 6,675 feet above sea level to 1,247 feet above sea level took 7 minutes and covered 19 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at F. D. Roosevelt Airport, TNCE, was made from the southwest, with a heading of 50.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,124 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 06 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 267 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 95 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -304 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 120 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 13 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 487 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 84 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 36 minutes. The aircraft used 205 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at TNCE F. D. Roosevelt Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its landing maneuver. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 50.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,124 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 95 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 267 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing process. The touchdown rate of -304 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting that the aircraft had a stable and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 25°C and a wind speed of 14 kt from a direction of 120°. The crosswind component was 13 kt, while the headwind component was 5 kt. Despite these wind conditions, the pilot was able to maintain a very good runway touchdown alignment, indicating a high level of skill and experience.
The total landing distance of 487 meters was 37% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had made a smooth and controlled approach, and had been able to slow the aircraft down quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing process.
Overall, the landing of FFX P180 03 01 at TNCE F. D. Roosevelt Airport was a successful and well-executed maneuver, demonstrating a high level of proficiency and skill on the part of the pilot. The aircraft's performance was satisfactory, and the landing was completed with a high degree of precision and control.
