Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,833 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 378 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 737-700 aircraft, which departed from SBBH Pampulha - Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The takeoff roll began on runway 31, and the aircraft lifted off at a speed of 142 knots, covering a distance of 1,028 meters, which was 44% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 29°C, a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 20°, with a negligible crosswind and headwind.
Following a smooth takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started approximately 1 mile west of the departure airport. The climb phase involved an ascent from an initial altitude of 3,645 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 39,102 feet, a vertical increase of 35,457 feet, over a distance of 214 nautical miles, and took approximately 34 minutes to complete. The enroute level cruise phase began 8 miles southeast of Padre Paraiso, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and lasted for 60 minutes, covering a distance of 814 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it initiated its enroute descent, which began 105 miles northeast of Cabedelo, Paraiba, Brazil. The descent phase involved a decrease in altitude from 38,994 feet to 1,459 feet, a vertical decrease of 37,535 feet, over a distance of 135 nautical miles, and took approximately 14 minutes to complete. The final approach to runway 12 at SBFN Fernando de Noronha Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 94.0° at an altitude of 1,275 feet above ground level, and 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold.
The landing on runway 12 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 124 knots, covering a distance of 380 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The touchdown rate was fair at -253 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 31°C, a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 130°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
Following a smooth landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile, and took less than 1 minute to complete. The total flight distance was 1,169 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 114 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,455 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was characterized by smooth and efficient operations, with good weather conditions and minimal wind effects.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at SBFN Fernando de Noronha Airport, achieving a high score of 99.7%. The final approach to runway 12 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 94.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,275 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 132 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 380 meters, which is within the expected range. The touchdown speed was also good at 124 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -253 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly steeper descent than desired. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 31°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 130°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and make the landing more manageable.
The total landing distance was 853 meters, which is 47% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and stop within a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft performing well in terms of speed, distance, and alignment. The high score of 99.7% reflects the pilot's skill and experience in executing a safe and controlled landing.
