Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,081 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,081 m of the 3,987 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 459 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 30 at LIPE Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,489 meters, which is 70% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from 219°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south of Calderara di Reno, Italy, and climbed from an altitude of 1,154 feet above sea level to 17,930 feet above sea level, an increase of 16,776 feet, in 8 minutes and covering 28 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead LIFI Aviosuperficie Stella Fiesso Umbertiano, Italy, and lasted for 23 minutes, covering 168 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile west of Habach, Germany, and descended from 17,721 feet above sea level to 3,990 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,731 feet, in 9 minutes and covering 45 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile northwest of Lengdorf, Germany, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile southeast of Fraunberg, Germany, and descended from 4,000 feet above sea level to 2,773 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,228 feet, in 2 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26L at EDDM Munich Airport was made from the east, heading 264.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,298 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 26L, which has a length of 3,987 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 136 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 460 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 132 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -258 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from 282°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 2,003 meters, which is 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 8 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 259 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 57 minutes. The aircraft used 3,156 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed on runway 26L at EDDM Munich Airport, achieving a high score of 99.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 264.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,298 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was within the acceptable range at 136 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate. The touchdown rate of -258 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating that the aircraft touched down with a moderate amount of deceleration.
The landing distance of 2,003 meters, which is 50% of the runway length, was within the acceptable range. The runway length of 3,987 meters provided a sufficient margin for the aircraft to come to a stop. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a gentle headwind of 4 knots. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, which made the landing even more challenging. The pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed and alignment in these conditions was commendable.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop within a reasonable distance and maintaining a good alignment with the runway. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the execution of the landing, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory.
