Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.

Side view — the last 1,176 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,176 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 413 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight, operated by a Kodiak 100 aircraft, began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. After a smooth departure roll on runway 32 from the 06D Rolla Municipal Airport, the aircraft lifted off the ground at a liftoff speed of 85 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16°C with winds blowing at 14 knots at 20°.
The enroute climb started about 2 miles north of the 06D Rolla Municipal Airport, and during this phase, the aircraft ascended from 2,838 feet above sea level to 6,203 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,365 feet. The climb was completed in 3 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 5 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 4 miles north-east of the 06D Rolla Municipal Airport and lasted for 20 minutes while the aircraft covered a distance of 67 nautical miles.
Throughout the enroute phase, the aircraft encountered varying weather conditions, with significant altitude changes. The enroute climb started 4 miles north-west of ND84 Windingland Private Airport, and a subsequent descent followed, decreasing the aircraft's altitude from 5,636 feet to 3,616 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. Another short enroute level cruise started 2 miles north-east of 97ND Walser Strip park River, lasting 2 minutes while covering 5 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 5 miles west of Grafton and continued until the aircraft reached 3,604 feet, a decrease of 1,130 feet, completed in 2 minutes covering 4 nautical miles. The final short enroute level cruise, lasting 2 minutes, started 1 mile west of Grafton and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The flight then began its terminal phase, with the aircraft conducting a final descent from an altitude of 2,237 feet to 1,192 feet above ground level in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft lined up for its instrument landing approach on runway 35 at KGAF Hutson Field, located 1 nautical mile south of the airport, at an altitude of 368 feet above ground level and a heading of 3.0°.
Landing on the runway, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 62 knots, indicating a good touchdown speed. The touchdown distance was also good at 412 meters, covering just over 51% of the runway's length of 1,176 meters. The aircraft's runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, being 5.8 meters off the centreline. Local weather conditions for the landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C with winds blowing at 19 knots at 350°.
The final segment of the flight involved taxiing from the runway to the parking area, which took less than 1 minute and covered a short distance, approximately less than 1 nautical mile. Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 99 nautical miles, using 98 kg of fuel, and lasted 39 minutes.
Report: Successful Landing of Kodiak 100 at KGAF Hutson Field
The Kodiak 100 aircraft completed a successful landing at KGAF Hutson Field, achieving a final score of 97.5%. The aircraft approached the runway 35 from the south, with a heading of 3.0° at an altitude of 368 feet above ground level (agl) and 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold.
During the final approach, the aircraft maintained a smooth and controlled descent, with a threshold speed that was slightly above the target at 74 knots. The touchdown distance, which measures the time it takes for the aircraft to stop after landing, was measured at an impressive 412 meters. The touchdown speed of 62 knots was also satisfactory, indicating good control and stability during the landing process.
A notable aspect of this landing was the excellent touchdown rate of -62 feet per minute (fpm), which demonstrates the pilot's exceptional proficiency in executing a smooth and controlled landing. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, with the aircraft deviating from the centerline by approximately 5.8 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing posed a moderate headwind, with a speed of 19 knots. This crosswind was relatively minor, amounting to 3 knots, and therefore had little impact on the overall outcome of the landing.
Throughout the landing process, the pilot demonstrated excellent skill and control, ultimately achieving a total landing distance of 600 meters, which represents 51% of the available runway length. The runway rollout alignment was exceptionally good, indicating that the pilot had successfully brought the aircraft to a stop with minimal deviation from the centerline.
Overall, this landing was an example of a well-executed and controlled operation, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and proficiency in navigating the aircraft to a safe and successful touchdown at KGAF Hutson Field.
