MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,426 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,426 m of the 3,494 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,121 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 09 at LBWN Varna Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,027 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 13 knots at 120 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 12 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south east of Aksakovo, where the aircraft climbed from 1,229 feet above sea level to 5,891 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,662 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 4 miles west of Zlatni Pyasatsi, where the aircraft descended from 5,886 feet above sea level to 4,938 feet above sea level, a decrease of 948 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The enroute climb then started 7 miles north of Aksakovo, where the aircraft climbed from 4,936 feet above sea level to 35,164 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,227 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile south east of Gaiseni, where the aircraft cruised at a level altitude for 49 minutes, covering a distance of 325 nautical miles. The enroute descent then started 1 mile north of Szigetszentmiklos, where the aircraft descended from 35,261 feet above sea level to 3,089 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,172 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 106 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile south east of Schwadorf, where the aircraft cruised at a level altitude for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute climb then started 1 mile north of LOWW Vienna International Airport, where the aircraft climbed from 3,395 feet above sea level to 4,543 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,148 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile south west of Raasdorf, where the aircraft cruised at a level altitude for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The enroute descent then started 1 mile south east of Ottakring, where the aircraft descended from 4,756 feet above sea level to 2,235 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,521 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 11 at LOWW Vienna International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 116.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,610 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 11, which had a length of 3,494 meters. The threshold height was well above the target, while the threshold speed was excessively high at 179 knots.
The touchdown point was 713 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 150 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -467 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 14.7 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 14°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 38 degrees, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a head
The aircraft in question, an E195, has landed at Vienna International Airport (LOWW) with a score of 67.7%. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 116.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,610 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was attempting to land on runway 11, which has a length of 3,494 meters.
Upon analysis, it appears that the aircraft did not meet the target threshold height, being 79 feet agl, which is significantly higher than the desired height. Furthermore, the threshold speed was excessively high at 179 knots, indicating that the aircraft may have been descending too quickly or not configured correctly for landing.
The touchdown point was located 713 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which suggests that the aircraft may have landed too far down the runway. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 150 knots was slightly faster than desired, and the touchdown rate of -467 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, indicating a potentially rough landing.
Moreover, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 14.7 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the overall performance of the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14°C and a wind speed of 7 knots at 38°, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,354 meters, which accounts for 67% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft did not utilize the full length of the runway, potentially due to the excessive speed and hard touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 26.1 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the overall performance of the landing.
Overall, the landing performance of the E195 at Vienna International Airport was subpar, with several areas for improvement identified. These include reducing the threshold speed, improving the touchdown point accuracy, and ensuring a smoother touchdown rate.
