Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,027 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,061 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-800 took off from runway 22L at KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport after a 5-minute taxiing process. The aircraft departed at a takeoff distance of 3,179 feet, which was only 28% of the runway. During takeoff, it reached a liftoff speed of 149 knots.
After departing KDTW, the aircraft initiated a climb about 1 mile southwest of the airport, targeting an altitude of 37,177 feet above sea level. It successfully covered a distance of 133 nautical miles in the process, which took approximately 23 minutes and a climb from 1,655 feet above sea level to the desired altitude. The aircraft then entered a level cruise at approximately 3 miles southwest of Christiansburg, Ohio, lasting for 30 minutes while covering 209 nautical miles.
The initial level cruise phase was followed by a descent initiated 2 miles south of Lebanon, Virginia, where the aircraft descended from 36,767 feet above sea level to 8,596 feet, a decrease of 28,172 feet in 27 minutes and covering 129 nautical miles. Shortly after, the aircraft began another brief level cruise 2 miles south of Rock Hill, South Carolina, that lasted for only 3 minutes while covering 7 nautical miles.
However, the next descent was initiated 4 miles southwest of Catawba, South Carolina, from a height of 8,173 feet above sea level down to 1,989 feet, which occurred in just 8 minutes, covering 21 nautical miles. The aircraft proceeded to prepare for a final descent to land on runway 36C at KCLT Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
For the final approach, the aircraft navigated from the south with a heading of 356.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,248 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed smoothly, achieving a threshold speed, threshold height, and touchdown speed, although the touchdown speed seemed a little fast at 131 knots.
After a successful touchdown, the aircraft touched ground at a distance of 1,068 feet, meeting 37% of the runway's total length. The touchdown rate was fair at -295 feet per minute. A total landing distance of 3,679 feet was achieved and the runway rollout alignment was very good. Following the landing, it took the aircraft 5 minutes to taxi to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile. In total, the flight covered a distance of 507 nautical miles while taking 1 hour and 3 minutes to complete, with the aircraft using 9,381 pounds of fuel during the flight.
On this particular occasion, a Boeing 737-800 successfully landed at KCLT Charlotte Douglas International Airport, specifically on runway 36C. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, aligned with a heading of 356.0°, at a distance of 4 nm and an altitude of 1,248 ft above ground level (agl). The landing was carried out with a considerable degree of precision and control.
Upon landing, the aircraft's threshold height was found to be good, indicating that the aircraft touched down at the correct point on the runway. Moreover, the threshold speed of 133 kt, which is the speed at which the aircraft is intended to cross the threshold, was also satisfactory. The landing process was further enhanced by a relatively low touchdown distance of 1,068 ft and a well-aligned runway touchdown.
Given the local weather conditions, the wind was relatively calm, measuring 2 kt at 330°. However, the slight presence of crosswind and headwind was not expected to impact the landing process significantly, with respective velocities of 1 kt and 1 kt. In terms of flight control, the aircraft achieved a decent touchdown speed of 131 kt, despite being slightly above the recommended speed. The touchdown rate was fair, at -295 fpm.
Upon touching down, the total landing distance covered by the aircraft was 3,679 ft, accounting for approximately 37% of the available runway length of 10,027 ft. The runway rollout alignment following the landing was also excellent, demonstrating exceptional control on the part of the pilots. Overall, this landing was an exemplary display of skill and expertise, with a near-perfect final approach and a safe touchdown on the designated runway.
