Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,135 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 235 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 930, then departed from runway 28 at KSAV Savannah Hilton Head International Airport. The takeoff distance was 586 meters, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 95 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°. The crosswind was negligible, but there was a headwind of 1 knot. The enroute climb started shortly after takeoff, with the aircraft ascending from 513 feet above sea level to 28,009 feet above sea level, a total increase of 27,497 feet. This climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 55 nautical miles.
Once the aircraft reached cruising altitude, it began its level cruise, which lasted for 228 minutes and covered a distance of 1,201 nautical miles. The cruise took place 1 mile west of Stillmore, Georgia. After the cruise, the aircraft started its enroute descent, which began 6 miles east of Lux Field Hartsel in Colorado. The descent took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 59 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 28,004 feet above sea level to 8,581 feet above sea level.
The final approach to runway 33 at KASE Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 343.0° at 1 nautical mile and 870 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 33 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 237 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 98 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -372 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 26°C and a wind speed of 11 knots at 320°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 10 knots. The total landing distance was 933 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft took 1 minute to taxi to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,318 nautical miles, and the flight took 271 minutes. The aircraft used 767 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed at KASE Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) with a score of 85.4%. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 343.0° at 1 nautical mile and 870 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on runway 33, which has a length of 2,135 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 104 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to slow down more before touchdown. The touchdown distance was good at 237 meters, indicating that the aircraft was able to land within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
The touchdown speed was excessively fast at 98 knots, which may have resulted in a firm touchdown rate of -372 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from 320°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. These conditions likely contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance was 933 meters, which is 44% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to land and come to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, while there were some areas for improvement, such as the excessive threshold speed and touchdown speed, the TBM 930 aircraft was able to land safely and efficiently at KASE Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field).
