Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,484 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 394 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an RJ100, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LIEA Alghero-Fertilia Airport in Alghero, Sardegna, Italy. This taxiing process took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 02, with a takeoff distance of 1,505 meters, which is 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 140 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 30°C and a wind speed of 14 knots from a direction of 299°. This resulted in a crosswind of 14 knots and a headwind of 1 knot. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile northeast of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,091 feet above sea level to 31,050 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,958 feet, in 29 minutes and covering a distance of 162 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 31 miles northwest of Rogliano, Corse, France, and lasted for 29 minutes, covering a distance of 182 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile southwest of Giornico, Ticino, Switzerland, descending from 31,132 feet above sea level to 5,494 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,637 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 66 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again overhead Oberrohrdorf, Kanton Aargau, Switzerland, and lasted for 8 minutes, covering a distance of 23 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 1 mile east of Wila, Kanton Zurich, Switzerland, descending from 5,074 feet above sea level to 2,824 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,250 feet, in 4 minutes and covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at LSZH Zürich Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,416 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 28, which has a length of 2,484 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 120 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 394 meters, and the touchdown speed was 111 knots, which was also good.
The touchdown rate was fair at -245 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 336°, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 923 meters, which is 37% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 4 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 450 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 102 minutes. The aircraft used 3,466 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The RJ100 aircraft successfully landed at LSZH Zürich Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The final approach to runway 28 was conducted from the east, with the aircraft heading 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,416 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's approach to the runway was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 120 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 394 meters, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown speed of 111 knots was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. However, the touchdown rate of -245 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have achieved a more gradual descent.
One minor issue was observed during the landing, as the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline. This deviation from the centerline may have been due to a slight miscalculation of the approach path or a minor wind effect.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 336°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and headwind, making the landing even more straightforward.
The total landing distance of 923 meters was 37% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating good skills and judgment. However, there is room for improvement in terms of achieving a more gradual touchdown rate and maintaining a more precise centerline alignment.
