Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,442 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,029 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 28 at KSVH Statesville Regional Airport. The Cessna CJ4 Citation took off with a takeoff distance of 2,111 feet, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 138 knots, and the aircraft was able to lift off the ground with a local wind of 5 knots at 269 degrees, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 5-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of KSVH Statesville Regional Airport. The climb started from an altitude of 1,958 feet above sea level and reached 2,127 feet above sea level, an increase of 169 feet, in less than 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The enroute level cruise then began, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile east of 83NR Wootens Airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 2,569 feet above sea level to 1,474 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,095 feet, in 2 minutes and covering 2 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 28 at KSVH Statesville Regional Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 277.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 502 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 28 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,028 feet, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 92 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -69 feet per minute was excellent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions during the landing were a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind of 5 knots at 270 degrees, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 5-knot headwind. The total landing distance was 2,605 feet, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The total flight distance was 10 nautical miles, and the flight used 79 pounds of fuel.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KSVH Statesville Regional Airport, achieving a score of 96.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 277.0° at 1 nautical mile and 502 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions.
The temperature at the time of landing was 72°F, with a wind speed of 5 knots from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 5 knots, which was favorable for the landing. The aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 92 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. However, the touchdown distance of 1,028 feet was within acceptable limits.
The pilot demonstrated excellent control during the landing, achieving a touchdown rate of -69 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates a smooth and controlled descent, which is essential for a safe landing. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft aligning itself precisely with the centerline of the runway.
The total landing distance of 2,605 feet was 48% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, demonstrating the pilot's expertise and the aircraft's capabilities. The score of 96.7% reflects the high level of proficiency displayed during the landing.
