Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,749 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,749 m of the 2,434 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 522 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 25C at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF), with a takeoff distance of 1,183 meters, which was 30% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 154 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Frankfurt Airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 14°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 320°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Frankfurt Airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,362 feet above sea level to 11,588 feet above sea level, an increase of 10,226 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Wackernheim, Germany, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 11,705 feet above sea level to 33,132 feet above sea level, an increase of 21,427 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 79 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile east of Bergheim, Germany, and lasted for 39 minutes, covering 268 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 33,671 feet above sea level to 3,389 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,282 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 105 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 4 miles east of Glossop, England, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent from 3,445 feet above sea level to 1,530 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,914 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23R at Manchester Airport (EGCC) was made from the north-east, heading 231.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,301 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 23R, which had a length of 2,434 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 145 knots.
The touchdown point was 113 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 142 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -288 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 11°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 51°.
The total landing distance was 1,675 meters, which was 69% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 492 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 95 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 4,222 kilograms.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Manchester Airport's runway 23R, achieving a score of 98.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, heading 231.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,301 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 145 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly faster touchdown speed of 142 knots. However, the touchdown point was 113 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown rate of -288 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting a moderate rate of descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 11°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 51°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 2 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 1,675 meters was 69% of the available runway length of 2,434 meters, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was excellent, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with only minor deviations from the target parameters.
