Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,814 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,175 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23 at EGPE Inverness Airport, where the DA40-XLS aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 220 meters, which is 12% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 63 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb overhead EGPE Inverness Airport, rising from an altitude of 735 feet above sea level to 161 feet above sea level, an increase of 574 feet in less than 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This rapid ascent was achieved with a minimal increase in altitude, demonstrating the aircraft's ability to efficiently climb.
The final approach to runway 05 at EGPE Inverness Airport was initiated from the west, with the aircraft heading 77.0 degrees at an altitude of 125 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. However, the landing was not without its challenges, as the threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 97 knots.
The touchdown point was located very far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 48 knots was good, and the touchdown rate of -86 feet per minute was excellent. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.7 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,401 meters, which is 77% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centreline. Despite these minor issues, the flight was completed successfully, with a total flight distance of 2 nautical miles and a fuel consumption of 40 kilograms.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed on runway 05 at EGPE Inverness Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 77.0° at 0 nm and 125 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. This indicates that the pilot may have been unable to maintain a stable approach or may have been too high on final approach.
The threshold height at 77 ft agl was well above the target, suggesting that the pilot may have been too high on final approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 97 kt, which is above the recommended landing speed for the DA40-XLS. The touchdown speed of 48 kt was good, and the touchdown rate of -86 fpm was excellent, indicating that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's descent effectively.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 2 kt at 270°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 kt, and the tailwind was 2 kt, which may have contributed to the long touchdown point. The total landing distance was 1,401 m, which is 77% of the available runway length of 1,814 m.
The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.2 m from the centreline, which may indicate that the pilot was not able to maintain a stable alignment during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including maintaining a stable approach, controlling the threshold height and speed, and aligning the aircraft during the rollout phase.
