Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,699 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,699 m of the 2,483 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 436 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, taking 11 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 22L, with a takeoff distance of 1,330 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 162 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 27°C temperature and a wind speed of 23 knots at 250°. The crosswind was 10 knots, and the headwind was 21 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south of Saint-Laurent-du-Var, France, and the aircraft climbed from 1,053 feet above sea level to 37,541 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,488 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 150 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile southeast of Les Gets, France, and lasted for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 92 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 37,801 feet above sea level to 24,324 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,477 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 51 nautical miles. This descent started overhead Aesch, Switzerland.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 2 miles southwest of Wald, Germany, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 1 mile north of Inzigkofen, Germany, and the aircraft descended from 23,629 feet above sea level to 4,790 feet above sea level, a decrease of 18,839 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 60 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 1 mile northwest of Ettlingen, Germany, and lasting for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute descent started overhead Au am Rhein, Germany, and the aircraft descended from 4,011 feet above sea level to 1,706 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,305 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 21 at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport was from the northeast, heading 212.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,294 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft performed a go-around at 14 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 21, which is 2,483 meters long. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 136 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 438 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -277 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 10 knots at 210°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 10 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,618 meters, which is 65% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 394 nautical miles, taking 88 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,513 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, achieving a score of 95.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 212.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 2,483 meters and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated good threshold height and speed, with a threshold speed of 129 kt. However, the touchdown speed of 134 kt was slightly above the optimal range, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal landing conditions. The touchdown rate of -277 fpm was considered fair, suggesting a moderate rate of descent.
The aircraft's touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.2 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 17°C and a 10 kt headwind from 210°, did not significantly impact the landing. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 kt.
The total landing distance of 1,618 meters was within the acceptable range, accounting for 65% of the runway's length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop safely within the available runway space. The runway rollout alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the landing phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown phases. However, minor deviations in touchdown speed and position alignment suggest areas for improvement in future landings.
