Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,495 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 562 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Rodríguez Ballón International Airport in Arequipa, Peru, the Boeing 737-900 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft reached the runway threshold, it initiated its departure roll on runway 28, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 140 knots. The takeoff distance of 1,631 meters accounted for 64% of the runway length, with the aircraft clearing the ground at a height of 9,080 feet above sea level.
As the aircraft transitioned into the enroute climb phase, it began ascending from 9,080 feet to 36,926 feet, an increase of 27,847 feet, over a distance of 280 nautical miles in 38 minutes. The climb phase was punctuated by several level cruise segments, with the first commencing 25 miles east of Manu Airport in Peru, lasting 71 minutes and covering 562 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a series of climbs and level cruises, including a brief ascent from 37,395 feet to 38,996 feet, and a subsequent level cruise segment that lasted 114 minutes and covered 786 nautical miles. The descent phase began 13 miles southeast of Hacienda Santa Elena de Mirand Airport in Venezuela, with the aircraft descending from 38,987 feet to 1,538 feet in 17 minutes, covering 101 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached Simón Bolívar International Airport in Venezuela, it initiated its final approach to runway 10 from the west, aligning with the runway at 4 nautical miles and 1,356 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed of 136 knots, and the aircraft touched down 147 meters beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 127 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -209 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance of 981 meters accounted for 28% of the runway length, with the aircraft coming to a stop in a very good runway rollout alignment. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,765 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 234 minutes and a fuel consumption of 11,156 kilograms.
The Boeing 737-900 touched down on runway 10 at SVMI Simón Bolívar International Airport, demonstrating a good threshold height and speed of 136 kt. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a heading of 88.0° from 4 nm and 1,356 ft above ground level. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, ultimately touching down at a speed of 127 kt, which was within the acceptable range.
The touchdown characteristics were generally good, with a touchdown rate of -209 fpm, although this was considered fair. The touchdown point was 147 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight over-run. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned, deviating by 4.1 m from the centreline. However, the rollout alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining a consistent path along the runway.
The overall performance of the landing was satisfactory, with a total landing distance of 981 m, which accounted for 28% of the runway length. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 29 °C and a gentle headwind of 2 kt, did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing. The score for this landing was 97.4%, reflecting a high level of proficiency and control demonstrated by the pilot.
