Monitor your taxi speed
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
Side view — the last 906 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 906 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 181 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 22 at EGHN Isle of Wight / Sandown Airport. The DA40-XLS aircraft accelerated down the runway, reaching a liftoff speed of 63 kt after a takeoff distance of 130 m, which accounted for 14% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 16 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt from 270 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern, it demonstrated impressive agility, completing the pattern entry in less than 1 nm in 16 seconds. The subsequent left-hand pattern crosswind was navigated with ease, taking 21 seconds to cover a distance of less than 1 nm. The pattern downwind turn was executed at an angle of 72.5 ° to the runway, covering a distance of 1 nm. The downwind leg itself was 2 nm long and took 66 seconds to complete.
The base leg turn was another highlight of the flight, with the aircraft covering a distance of 1 nm at an angle of 29.4 ° to the runway. The base leg itself was less than 1 nm long and took 29 seconds to complete. The final turn was the shortest of the pattern, taking just 10 seconds to cover a distance of less than 1 nm.
The final approach to runway 22 was made from the north-east, with the aircraft flying at a heading of 225.0 ° and an altitude of 302 ft above ground level (agl) at a distance of 1 nm from the runway. The landing itself was smooth, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 51 kt and a distance of 178 m from the threshold. The touchdown rate was excellent at -51 fpm, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 8.0 m.
The total landing distance was 581 m, accounting for 64% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline by 9.6 m. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of 3 nm in 1 minute. The total flight distance was 8 nm, and the flight used -3 kg of fuel.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EGHN Isle of Wight / Sandown Airport, achieving a score of 95.3%. The final approach was made from the north east, heading 225.0° at 1 nm and 302 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 22, which has a length of 906 m.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 64 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 178 m was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 51 kt was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -51 fpm was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
Despite the good performance in terms of speed and distance, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.0 m from the centreline. This may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were mild, with a temperature of 15 °C and a light wind of 2 kt at 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 kt, which suggests that the wind was not a significant factor in the landing.
The total landing distance of 581 m was 64% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.6 m from the centreline, which may indicate a slight deviation in the aircraft's trajectory during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a good score and demonstrating good control and precision during the approach and touchdown phases. However, there were some minor deviations from the ideal performance, which may be worth addressing in future training or practice sessions.
