Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,423 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,423 ft of the 9,032 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,791 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 15L at George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport (KIAH). The takeoff distance was 7,074 feet, which accounted for 59% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 159 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 71°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 144°. The crosswind and headwind were both 0 knots. The enroute climb began 2 miles east of Aldine, Texas, and lasted for 39 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,040 feet above sea level to 34,697 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 271 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 8 miles northeast of the Green Hill Compressors Heliport (4LA2) in Leeville, Louisiana. This phase lasted for 40 minutes and covered a distance of 329 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 66 miles west of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, and descended from 35,210 feet above sea level to 1,360 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 153 nautical miles in 26 minutes.
The final approach to runway 35R at Orlando International Airport (KMCO) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 359.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,254 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 35R, which had a length of 9,032 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots. The touchdown point was 428 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 140 knots. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -94 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 56°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 290°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 5,159 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 764 nautical miles and lasted for 127 minutes, using 11,511 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KMCO Orlando International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.0%. The final approach to runway 35R was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 359.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,254 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 146 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing speed. The touchdown point was located 428 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation.
The touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, but the touchdown rate of -94 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 56°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 290°. The crosswind and headwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each, which contributed to a smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 5,159 feet was 57% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and precision during the final approach and landing phases.
