Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,057 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,057 ft of the 8,976 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,432 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 34L at KDEN Denver International Airport. The takeoff distance was 6,306 feet, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 58°F and winds of 6 knots at 199°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was 6 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started 2 miles northwest of KDEN Denver International Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 6,346 feet above sea level to 39,980 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,634 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 146 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles southwest of Hanna, Wyoming. This phase lasted for 27 minutes and covered a distance of 194 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 29 miles northwest of KDUB Dubois Mun Dubois, Wyoming. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 39,791 feet above sea level to 7,288 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,503 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 131 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles east of MT42 Hasskamp STOLport Three Forks, Montana. This phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 2 miles north of Manhattan, Montana. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 7,217 feet above sea level to 5,721 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,496 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12 at KBZN Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport was made from the northwest, with a heading of 136.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,283 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 12, which had a length of 8,976 feet. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots.
The touchdown point was 2,071 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -218 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 26 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°F and winds of 8 knots at 8°. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the tailwind was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 6,796 feet, which accounted for 76% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 76 feet from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 492 nautical miles, taking 95 minutes, and the aircraft used 8,185 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KBZN Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing performance. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the northwest, heading 136.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,283 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 2,071 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing point. The touchdown speed of 123 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -218 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair. This indicates that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher-than-desired rate of descent during the landing.
The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 26 feet from the centreline, which could have contributed to the deviation from the ideal landing point. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 76 feet from the centreline, which may have affected the aircraft's ability to maintain a straight path during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 32°F and winds of 8 knots at 8°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft's landing distance of 6,796 feet was 76% of the available runway length, which is a relatively high percentage.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including the deviation from the ideal landing point, the slightly high threshold speed, and the misaligned runway touchdown and rollout positions. These issues may be addressed through further training and practice to improve the aircraft's landing performance.
