Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,289 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 589 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Auckland International Airport, the Airbus A320 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. As the aircraft lined up on runway 05R, the crew initiated the departure roll, and the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 156 knots. The takeoff distance of 1,576 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway, was within the expected parameters.
As the aircraft climbed away from Auckland, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 35,447 feet above sea level in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 100 nautical miles. The climb was characterized by a steady increase in altitude, with the aircraft reaching a maximum rate of climb. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 224 nautical miles. The crew then initiated the enroute descent, which began 15 miles west of Molesworth Airport and ended with a landing at Christchurch International Airport. The descent phase was marked by a series of level cruises, with the aircraft briefly leveling off at various altitudes before continuing its descent.
The final approach to runway 02 at Christchurch International Airport was initiated from the south west, with the aircraft descending from an altitude of 2,787 feet above sea level to a touchdown height of 59 feet above ground level. The landing was characterized by a slightly fast touchdown speed of 127 knots and a touchdown rate of -286 feet per minute. The aircraft touched down 171 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with the runway touchdown position being slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance of 1,286 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway, was within the expected parameters. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 453 nautical miles, with the aircraft using 3,422 kilograms of fuel during the 90-minute flight.
The final approach to runway 02 at Christchurch International Airport was initiated from the south west, heading 40.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,324 feet above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 59 feet above ground level, slightly above the target. The threshold speed was good at 133 knots, indicating a well-controlled descent.
As the aircraft touched down 171 meters beyond the touchdown zone, the touchdown speed of 127 knots was a little fast, resulting in a fair touchdown rate of -286 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centreline, which may have been due to the slight tailwind of 2 knots. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind of 2 knots at 210°, did not significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,286 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 91.5%.
