Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,542 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 250 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 27 at EDDR Saarbrücken Airport. The takeoff distance was 980 meters, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 140 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 °C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 59°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of EDDR Saarbrücken Airport. The climb took 21 minutes and covered 127 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,818 feet above sea level to 34,296 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,477 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Sommerach in Bavaria, Germany. This phase lasted for 8 minutes and covered 64 nautical miles. The enroute descent then began 1 mile south of Munchberg in Bavaria, Germany. The descent took 20 minutes and covered 99 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 34,493 feet above sea level to 1,985 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,508 feet.
The final approach to runway 22 at EDDC Dresden Airport was made from the north-east, with a heading of 221.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,247 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 22, which had a length of 2,542 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 139 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 252 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -352 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14 °C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 290°. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,420 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 297 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 61 minutes. The aircraft used 2,935 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at EDDC Dresden Airport, achieving a score of 95.8%. The final approach to runway 22 was initiated from the north east, heading 221.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,247 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 138 kt, registering at 139 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 252 meters was deemed good, suggesting a well-executed landing. The touchdown speed of 134 kt was slightly faster than desired, but the firm touchdown rate of -352 feet per minute (fpm) indicated a controlled impact.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.6 meters, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of 14°C, a wind speed of 9 kt from 290°, resulting in a 9 kt crosswind and a 3 kt headwind.
The total landing distance of 1,420 meters was 56% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, preventing any potential loss of control or deviation from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 95.8%. However, there were some minor deviations from the desired parameters, including a slightly fast touchdown speed and a misaligned touchdown position. These minor issues can be addressed through further training and refinement of the pilot's skills.
