Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,570 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 418 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in the Boeing 737-800 was a smooth operation from start to finish. Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LPAZ Santa Maria Airport took 4 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nm. The departure roll on runway 18 was efficient, with a takeoff distance of 932 m, using 30% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 140 kn, under local weather conditions of 23°C temperature with a 10 kn wind at 210° resulting in a 6 kn crosswind and 7 kn headwind.
The enroute climb began overhead LPAZ Santa Maria Airport Vila do Porto, climbing from 1,344 ft asl to 39,808 ft asl in 33 minutes, covering 217 nm. The level cruise then started at Latitude: 39.5158576, Longitude: -21.8851638 and lasted 7 minutes, covering 58 nm. Another climb began at Latitude: 39.9709734, Longitude: -20.7396791, increasing from 39,899 ft asl to 40,852 ft asl in 2 minutes over 18 nm. The subsequent level cruise lasted 225 minutes from Latitude: 40.1191108, Longitude: -20.3571728, covering 1,135 nm.
The descent phase commenced 2 miles west of La Tagniere, descending from 41,238 ft asl to 2,663 ft asl in 19 minutes, covering 89 nm. The final approach to runway 22 at LSGG Geneva Cointrin International Airport from the northeast direction resulted in a successful landing. The touchdown was smooth, with a touchdown distance of 418 m at a speed of 118 kn and a rate of -157 ft/m. The total landing distance of 871 m was 24% of the runway length, with perfect alignment and rollout.
Overall, the total flight distance covered was 1,524 nm in 206 minutes, utilizing 7,970 kg of fuel. The flight was executed efficiently and safely.
