Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,006 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,006 ft of the 11,040 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,506 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 08 at KDEN Denver International Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,539 feet, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 25 °F, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 3 miles east of KDEN Denver International Airport. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 135 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 6,286 feet above sea level to 37,388 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,102 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles west of 6KS4 Bussen Airport in Sharon Springs, Kansas. This phase lasted for 129 minutes and covered a distance of 1,016 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead FD68 Wakulla Club Airport in St. Marks, Florida. The descent took 33 minutes and covered a distance of 156 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 37,129 feet above sea level to 1,309 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,820 feet.
The final approach to runway 19R at KTPA Tampa International Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 182.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,287 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 19R, which had a length of 11,040 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 140 knots. The touchdown point was 156 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 135 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -58 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 4,756 feet, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,316 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 198 minutes. The aircraft used 15,463 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KTPA Tampa International Airport, achieving a perfect score of 100.0%. The final approach to runway 19R was initiated from the north, with the aircraft heading 182.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,287 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 140 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal landing conditions. The touchdown point was located 156 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation.
The touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, but the touchdown rate of -58 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and precision in navigating the aircraft to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 70°F. The total landing distance of 4,756 feet was 43% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was brought to a stop in a controlled and stable manner.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop in a controlled manner. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the precision and smoothness of the landing, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory in all aspects.
