Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,557 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 68 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 2.42 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A319, then departed from runway 20 at KBAF Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,538 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 181 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 180 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile northeast of Westfield, Massachusetts, and ascended from an altitude of 1,305 feet above sea level to 10,766 feet above sea level, an increase of 9,461 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 2 miles southwest of Monson, Massachusetts, and lasted for 8 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile southwest of Bolton, Massachusetts, and the aircraft descended from 10,594 feet above sea level to 2,493 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,101 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began again 1 mile south of Andover, Massachusetts, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23 at KBED Laurence G Hanscom Field was from the northeast, with a heading of 217.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,206 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft went around at 312 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 23 was eventually successful, with a touchdown distance of 68 meters, a touchdown speed of 128 knots, and a touchdown rate of -1,372 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 18.9 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 24.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 139 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 502 meters, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The total flight distance was 98 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 57 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -6,515 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 aircraft successfully landed at KBED Laurence G Hanscom Field, but with some notable deviations from ideal performance. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, heading 217.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,206 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 23, which has a length of 1,557 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 129 knots. This may indicate a slight delay in the aircraft's descent or a slight increase in airspeed during the final approach. The touchdown distance of 68 meters was good, and the touchdown speed of 128 knots was also within acceptable limits.
However, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -1,372 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a hard landing. This could be a concern for the aircraft's safety and the well-being of its occupants. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 18.9 meters from the centreline, which may indicate a deviation from the standard approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 139°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. These conditions may have contributed to the aircraft's misaligned touchdown.
The total landing distance of 502 meters was 32% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 24.7 meters from the centreline, which may indicate a deviation from the standard rollout path. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from ideal performance that may require attention from the pilots and air traffic control.
